Definition

Pepsinogen is an inactive enzyme precursor produced by the chief cells in the stomach lining, which, when activated to pepsin, plays a crucial role in the digestion of proteins by breaking them down into smaller peptides. It is converted into its active form, pepsin, upon exposure to hydrochloric acid and gastric juices.
