Definition

The autonomic nervous system is divided into two main parts: the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, which work together to regulate involuntary body functions like heart rate, digestion, and respiratory rates. The sympathetic division prepares the body for stressful or emergency situations (fight or flight), while the parasympathetic division helps maintain normal body functions and conserves physical resources (rest and digest).
