Definition

Imperialism is a policy or ideology by which a nation extends its power and influence over other countries, either by force or the establishment of economic and political dominance.

Analogy

Think of imperialism like a bigger, stronger kid in the playground who takes control of the swings, slide, and seesaw. Not only does he use these for himself but also dictates how others can use them.

Related terms

Colonialism: This is when a country takes full control over another region, settling it with its citizens and exploiting it economically.

Hegemony: This refers to leadership or dominance of one group over others. It's not just about physical control but also influencing culture, beliefs, values etc.

Neocolonialism: This is a form of indirect control where powerful countries influence the economy and politics of less powerful ones through globalization and capitalism rather than direct political control.
