Covalent Bond

Definition

A covalent bond is a type of chemical bond where two atoms share one or more pairs of electrons, resulting in the formation of molecules.

Analogy

Imagine you and your best friend have an agreement to always share your favorite snacks. You both contribute something (electrons), creating a stronger friendship (bond). This sharing relationship is similar to how atoms share electrons in covalent bonds.

Related terms

Ionic Bond: A type of chemical bond formed through an electrostatic attraction between two oppositely charged ions.

Polar Covalent Bond: A type of covalent bond where there is unequal sharing of electrons between atoms due to differences in electronegativity.

Nonpolar Covalent Bond: A type of covalent bond where electrons are shared equally because the bonded atoms have equal electronegativity.
