Total War

Definition

Total war is a military conflict in which nations mobilize all available resources in order to destroy another nation's ability to engage in war. The term can be used to describe conflicts where the laws of war are disregarded, or where the only acceptable outcome is the enemy's unconditional surrender.

Analogy

Think of total war as an intense game of chess. In a regular game, you might lose some pieces but still continue playing. However, in total war (or this intense version of chess), not only are all your pieces at risk, but so is your entire board and even your ability to play future games. It's an all-or-nothing scenario.

Related terms

Mobilization: This refers to the act of assembling and making both troops and supplies ready for war. It's like gathering all your tools before starting a big project.

Unconditional Surrender: This means giving up completely without any concessions from the victor. Imagine losing a bet and having to hand over everything you own without getting anything back.

War of Attrition: A strategy aimed at wearing down an opponent through continuous losses in personnel and material. It’s like running a marathon - it’s not about who runs fastest, but who can endure longer.
