This refers to the period from 1858-1947 when Britain ruled over India as part of its empire.

Analogy

Imagine if your older sibling took control over your shared bedroom without asking you and then started making all decisions - what color to paint walls, where each piece of furniture goes etc., That’s similar to how Britain took control over India.
