Definition

Waves of democratization refer to periods when multiple countries transition from authoritarian regimes towards democratic systems within a relatively short span of time. These waves often occur due to global events or regional influences that inspire demands for political reform.

Analogy

Imagine a group of friends who are hesitant to try a new activity, but once one person takes the lead and tries it, others gain confidence and join in. Similarly, waves of democratization occur when one country successfully transitions to democracy, inspiring neighboring countries to follow suit.
