Zimmermann Telegram

from class:

AP US History

Definition

The Zimmermann Telegram was a secret message sent by German Foreign Minister Arthur Zimmermann to Mexico during World War I. In the telegram, Zimmerman proposed that if Mexico joined the war against the United States, Germany would help Mexico regain territories lost to the US. The interception of this message by British intelligence played a significant role in turning public opinion in the US against Germany and ultimately led to American involvement in World War I.
