Basso Continuo

Definition

Basso continuo refers to a musical accompaniment technique commonly used in the Baroque period. It consists of a bass line played by one or more instruments, such as a cello or bassoon, along with harmonies indicated by numbers called figured bass.

Analogy

Think of the basso continuo as the foundation of a building. Just like how the foundation supports and provides stability for the entire structure, the basso continuo provides a solid harmonic framework for the music.
