Transatlantic Slave Trade

Definition

The Transatlantic Slave Trade was a mass human trafficking system where approximately 12-15 million Africans were forcibly transported to the Americas and the Caribbean from the 16th to the 19th centuries.

Analogy

Think of it like a horrific conveyor belt that moved people instead of products. Just as a factory might use a conveyor belt to move items from one place to another, the Transatlantic Slave Trade moved people against their will across an ocean.

Related terms

Middle Passage: This term refers specifically to the leg of the triangular trade route where enslaved Africans were transported across the Atlantic Ocean under brutal conditions.

Atlantic Trade Network: A broad term for all commerce conducted over the Atlantic Ocean between Europe, Africa, and America. It included not only slave trade but also goods such as sugar, tobacco, and raw materials.

Triangular Trade: This is a specific pattern within the Atlantic Trade Network involving three ports or regions. Goods would be shipped from Europe to Africa in exchange for slaves; these slaves would then be transported via Middle Passage to America (the second leg), and finally American goods would be shipped back to Europe (the third leg).
