Reduction Potential

Definition

Reduction potential, also known as redox potential, is a measure of the tendency of a chemical species to acquire electrons and thereby be reduced.

Analogy

Think of reduction potential like a game of musical chairs. The more eager you are to grab a chair (or in this case, an electron), the higher your reduction potential.

Related terms

Oxidation Potential: This is the opposite of reduction potential. It measures how likely it is for a substance to lose electrons and become oxidized.

Reduction Reaction: A type of reaction where an atom or molecule gains electrons.

Electrochemical Cell: A device that generates electrical energy from chemical reactions involving electron transfers.
