Definition

ΔG, or the change in Gibbs free energy, is a measure of the spontaneity and overall energy change of a chemical reaction. It indicates whether a reaction is exergonic (favorable, ΔG < 0) or endergonic (unfavorable, ΔG > 0).

Analogy

Think of ΔG as the balance between money spent and money earned in a business. If you have more money earned than spent (ΔG < 0), your business is profitable and spontaneous. But if you have more money spent than earned (ΔG > 0), your business is not sustainable.
