The sum rule is a calculus rule that states that the derivative of the sum of two functions is equal to the sum of their derivatives.

Analogy

Imagine you have two friends who are both running on a track. The sum rule tells us that if we want to know how fast they are running together, we can simply add up their individual speeds.
