City-states

Definition

City-states were independent, self-governing cities and their surrounding territories that functioned as individual political units in ancient civilizations. They had their own governments, laws, and economies.

Analogy

Think of city-states like different neighborhoods within a big city. Each neighborhood has its own local government, rules, and businesses, but they all exist within the larger framework of the city.
