Methylmercury

Definition

Methylmercury is a toxic form of mercury that forms when elemental mercury combines with carbon-containing compounds. It bioaccumulates in aquatic ecosystems and can have harmful effects on organisms higher up the food chain, including humans.

Analogy

Imagine methylmercury as a dangerous pollutant that spreads through a water system, similar to how a harmful rumor can quickly spread through a school. Just as the rumor affects different individuals and causes harm, methylmercury can impact various organisms in an ecosystem.
