Democratic Backsliding

Definition

Democratic backsliding, also known as democratic erosion or deconsolidation, refers to a gradual decline in the quality of democracy and a slide towards autocracy.

Analogy

Consider democratic backsliding like a game of Jenga. Each piece removed (rights, checks and balances) weakens the structure (democracy), making it more likely to topple over into autocracy.

Related terms

Autocracy: This is a system where one person (an autocrat) holds all power. It's often characterized by limited political freedoms and lack of accountability.

Populism: This political approach seeks to appeal to ordinary people who feel their concerns are disregarded by established elite groups. It can sometimes contribute to democratic backsliding if used to undermine institutions.

Checks and Balances: These are mechanisms that prevent any one branch of government from becoming too powerful. They're crucial for maintaining a healthy democracy but can be eroded during democratic backsliding.
