In the decades before the Civil War, the South continued to massively profit from cotton plantations while the North industrialized and revolutionized the manufacturing industry. The demand for cotton from the South was high, but slave labor was also in high demand after the ban on importing slaves from Africa. All of these factors contributed to a tense political climate.
