Wind Turbines

Definition

Wind turbines are tall structures with large blades that convert the kinetic energy of wind into mechanical power. This mechanical power is then used to generate electricity through a generator.

Analogy

Think of wind turbines as giant pinwheels on steroids. Just like how a pinwheel spins when you blow on it, wind turbines use the power of the wind to spin their blades and create electricity.

Related terms

Renewable Energy: As mentioned earlier, wind turbines are a form of renewable energy because they harness the power of wind, which is an abundant and naturally replenished resource.

Turbine Efficiency: Turbine efficiency refers to how effectively a turbine converts the kinetic energy from wind into usable electrical energy.

Offshore Wind Farms: Offshore wind farms are collections of multiple wind turbines located in bodies of water such as oceans or lakes. They take advantage of strong offshore winds for generating electricity.
