Inversions

Definition

Inversions occur when you rearrange the order of notes in a chord so that its lowest note is no longer the root. This creates different voicings and can change the overall sound and character of the chord.

Analogy

Imagine you have three friends standing in line from tallest to shortest. Now imagine if they decided to switch places so that now the shortest friend is at the front. That's what inversions do - they change up who takes center stage in a chord!
