AP Statistics Exam Review

What is the AP Statistics Exam?

Scoring and context

The 42-question MCQ section gives you roughly 2 minutes and 8 seconds per question. Questions are not arranged by difficulty or unit order, so do not assume early questions are easier. FRQ section: question types and pacing

Four questions in 90 minutes means roughly 22 minutes per question. Each question is worth 10 points. Questions 1 and 2 are multi-focus and may combine data collection, graphical analysis, probability, or interpretation across several parts. Question 3 is always inference. Question 4 is the multi-focus question that replaced the old investigative task format and rewards flexible thinking across data collection, analysis, and interpretation.

Scoring strategy

How FRQ scoring works and what graders look for

Each FRQ is scored out of 10 points, broken into parts. Graders award points for complete, correct statistical reasoning stated in context. Showing correct mechanics but omitting interpretation, or interpreting correctly but ignoring context, typically costs points. Partial credit is available across parts, so never leave a part blank. Even a partially correct procedure with a clear attempt earns more than nothing.

  • In context: Every interpretation must reference the actual variables in the problem. 'The mean is 24.3 mpg' earns more credit than 'the mean is 24.3'.
  • Conditions: For any inference procedure, you must check and state whether conditions are met. Skipping conditions costs points even if the rest of the test is correct.
  • Conclusion language: Hypothesis test conclusions must reference the p-value, the significance level, and the parameter in context. Avoid saying 'we accept the null hypothesis'.

Common mistakes

Accepting the null hypothesis

Hypothesis tests never result in accepting the null. You either reject it or fail to reject it. Writing 'we accept H0' is statistically incorrect and will cost points. Always write 'we fail to reject H0' and explain what that means for the specific research question.

Interpreting results without naming the context

A confidence interval interpretation that says 'we are 95% confident the true mean is between 12 and 18' is incomplete. You must name what the mean measures and which population it describes. Graders look for the parameter and the population in every interpretation.

Skipping the conditions check on inference questions

Every inference procedure requires you to verify conditions before running the test. Students who jump straight to mechanics without checking randomness, independence, and the appropriate distribution condition lose points even when the rest of the work is correct.

Confusing standard deviation and standard error

Standard deviation describes variability in a data set or population. Standard error describes variability in a sampling distribution. Using the wrong term in an explanation, or plugging in the wrong value in a formula, is a common and avoidable error on both MCQ and FRQ.

Running out of time on Question 4

Question 4 is the last FRQ and often has the most parts. Students who spend too long on Questions 1 through 3 arrive at Question 4 with fewer than 10 minutes. Practice your pacing so you have at least 20 minutes for Question 4.
