# School Data Privacy | Fiveable

## Overview

Last updated: April 2026

Fiveable helps high school students prepare for AP exams. Schools and districts use Fiveable as a resource for students and teachers. This page explains how Fiveable handles student data, what we collect, how we protect it, and what commitments we make to schools.

## What We Collect

- **Account information:** Name and email address.

- **Student-generated content:** FRQ responses, practice answers, and quiz responses submitted for scoring and feedback.

- **Usage data:** Pages visited, features used, and session information used to improve the product.

- **We do not collect:** Social Security numbers, health or medical data, discipline records, attendance records, parent or guardian contact information, physical addresses, phone numbers, or biometric data.

## How We Use Student Data

- Student data is used exclusively to provide educational services: study materials, FRQ scoring, progress tracking, and product improvement.

- Student data belongs to the school or district when students use Fiveable through a school or district.

- Fiveable does not sell student data, use student data for advertising, or share student data with marketing partners.

- Aggregated, de-identified data may be used for product improvement.

## Security

- Data is encrypted in transit with TLS 1.2 or higher.

- Stored data is encrypted using AES-256 encryption.

- Student data is stored in United States data centers.

- Fiveable uses role-based access controls, monitoring, secure authentication, and a NIST Cybersecurity Framework aligned security program.

## AI and Student Data

- Fiveable uses AI for features like FRQ scoring and feedback.

- FRQ scoring sends essay text and scoring rubrics to AI providers, without student names, email addresses, or other identifying information when not required.

- API agreements with Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, and xAI prohibit model training on API inputs and outputs where applicable.

- See [AI Transparency](/ai-transparency) for more details.

## Data Retention and Deletion

- Account data and student-generated content are retained while an account is active, plus up to 2 years after last activity.

- Schools and districts can request data export, deletion, or anonymization by contacting help@fiveable.me.

- At the end of a school or district relationship, Fiveable will return or securely delete data at the school's option.

## Legal Compliance

- Fiveable supports FERPA-aligned school use, COPPA school consent where applicable, and compliance with applicable state student data privacy laws.

- Fiveable can work with schools and districts that require a formal Data Privacy Agreement.
