Intro to Pharmacology
Carbidopa is a medication that inhibits the enzyme aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase, preventing the conversion of levodopa into dopamine outside of the brain. By doing so, it enhances the effectiveness of levodopa treatment in patients with Parkinson's disease by allowing more levodopa to reach the brain, where it is converted into dopamine. This synergistic effect helps alleviate the motor symptoms associated with Parkinson's disease.
