Definition

The principal axis is an imaginary line that passes through the center of a lens or mirror and is perpendicular to its surface.

Analogy

Think of the principal axis as the central highway that runs straight through the middle of a city, connecting all the important locations. Just like how the principal axis connects different parts of a lens or mirror.
