Acids & Bases

🔬2021-2022 Chemistry Study Guides - Acids & Bases

In chemistry, the world of acids and bases can reveal entirely new properties of substances. According to the Bronsted definition of acids and bases, an acid is an H+ donor and a base is an H+ accepter. Because of this relationship, acid-base reactions involve a transfer of H+ ions, otherwise known as protons, between an acid and a base. We measure the H+ concentration of a solution using pH. When acids and bases interact, they form new substances and classify as entirely new types of reactions. When a strong acid reacts with a strong base, a salt and water is produced, but more interesting things happen when weak acids and bases get involved.
