# AP Music Theory Roman Numeral FRQ Practice

## What the Roman Numeral FRQ asks

Part-Writing from Roman Numerals is FRQ 6 on the AP Music Theory exam. You get a key, a first chord, and a Roman numeral progression, and write all four voices following eighteenth-century voice-leading procedures.

- **45 min**: for FRQs 5 to 7 together
- **18 points**: for the whole progression
- **45%**: of your score, for the FRQ section

| Part | What it asks | Points |
| --- | --- | --- |
| A: Four-part realization | Bass notes, chord spelling, and voice leading, judged across the whole progression | 18 |

## How Roman Numeral FRQ practice works

1. **Read the full question.** The key, the first chord, and the Roman numerals, laid out the way the exam shows them.
2. **Write on a 10-minute timer.** Part of the 45 minutes the exam gives FRQs 5 to 7 together. Pause it or turn it off, and your response saves as you go.
3. **Submit for a score out of 18.** Your response is scored against the scoring guidelines written for that question. Your first score is included.

## Questions

**How many responses can I get scored?**

You can read every question without a plan. Your first scored response is included. A plan unlocks unlimited scoring.

**How do I write notes on the staff?**

Select Write on staff to write your answer on the question’s staff, and add typed notes below if they help. You can also switch to handwrite and add a photo of your page.

**How is FRQ 6 different from FRQ 5?**

FRQ 5 gives you a figured bass and asks for Roman numerals too. FRQ 6 gives you the Roman numerals, so you choose the bass notes and every upper voice.

**What mistakes commonly cost points?**

Parallel fifths and octaves, unresolved sevenths and leading tones, and the wrong doubled note. On the exam, voice leading is judged connection by connection, so one error doesn’t cost the whole exercise.
