APHuG is a relatively large AP class 👨‍🏫 with quite a few resources online, but there are some amazing ones like Fiveable 5️⃣ that are here to help! If you can practice for the exam 📝 and use these tips, then you should be all set to do awesome 🤩 on your FRQs and ace your MCQ 🧐 sections of your exam.

The AP Exam has broken down 💯 how much each unit is weighted on Section 1 (in a normal AP Exam year), so make sure to distribute most of your studying time equally ⏲️ between the units! Here is that breakdown by unit:

Tip 💡 #2: Use Fiveable + ASAP HuG 2️⃣

 It's a prep book, but the entire book is made up of images, graphic organizers, and flow charts! It's relatively small at just 215 pages, unlike those thick prep books, and the amount of text is very limited.

 Some of the content in AP Human Geo can be really confusing or overwhelming, but this book is incredibly visual so it helps you make sense of each topic. Plus, there are tons of charts that help explain all of the models & theories.

 Throughout the book, there are little icons that specify whether a topic is "must know," "should know," or "could know". This is an incredibly helpful feature to help you narrow down all of the important terms and concepts to focus on just what you need to get a 5.

Tip 💡 #3: Learn and Apply the Vocab 3️⃣

Vocabulary is super important 💪 to all social science classes, like AP US Gov and AP Psych, but it is especially 😫 important for APHuG MCQs and FRQs ✍️ On most released FRQs from exams, you will see part (A) asking you to define a vocabulary term 🧐 then you will have to explain it and apply it to a situation 🗺️ in the real world later in the FRQ!

Many textbooks 📚 and prep books have great vocab lists, but those are often very expensive 🤑, so consider checking out all of these released quizlet decks by unit for APHuG:

Barron’s and The Princeton Review are the two prep book companies that every AP student knows about 😋 They adequately prepare you for the exam, varying in the way they deliver information and the format they use.

The books are just going to cover the basic content of the class as they are a good source of practice with a detailed explanation for every answer. The books will also provide you with tips about how to approach each type of question.

identify and define the words you don’t understand and write them 📝 down in a sheet of paper, or even better, make a quizlet.

 That way you will be able to review these words before your exam. 😄 Not to mention you can search up previously made quizlets that will help you learn more words.

The most important thing you need to remember is 💵 to pay for your exam on time. Talk with the AP Coordinator of your high school, or if you are homeschooled, contact any high school close to you that offers AP Human Geography so you can take the exam there.

Also, talk with your school to know if they do any “practice week” ****before the exam. This may be helpful if any school near you offers it, don’t be afraid of contacting them 🙋🏻‍♀️

AP Human Geography Self-Study and Homeschool

AP Human will probably be more difficult than the other math classes you've taken. At the same time, it's doable! Concepts build on each other pretty quickly, so keep up with the work and ask questions if you're confused. It's a new way of thinking, but as long as you have a solid foundation in study skills, you'll make it through.

On the test, you'll have an hour to answer 60 multiple-choice questions (MCQs). Then, you'll have an hour and 15 minutes to answer 3 free-response questions (FRQs). Check out

Do NOT be discouraged by that 1 rate! AP HuG is an introductory AP class and many people's first. Most do not know what to expect or how to study until they take an AP exam. However, if you use Fiveable, you are all set 😎

We had more than 32 Fiveable AP HuG students 👨‍🎓 rate how hard the class was, and the average rating was 2.32/5, where a 5 means Super Hard and a 1 means Very Easy! All AP classes are going to have rigor and work, but AP HuG does not have too much of either 🎊

Human geography is the study of why people choose to live where they do and how humans and the environment interact to create the world that we live in. Human geographers seek to discover who lives where, how they live, and why they live there. The study of human geography involves the use of maps, models, and spatial analysis technologies as a means of abstracting and simplifying space and all it contains for study. Maps depict a three-dimensional Earth in two-dimensions, are inherently flawed due to this, and are designed with special purposes that should match the needs of the map-user.  This first unit emphasizes basic geography skills and the various types and uses of maps.

To understand the spatial aspects of phenomena, geographers use a broad set of concepts, skills, and tools. One basic concept is distance. For example, how far apart in space are houses in a community? This distance affects everything from how people relate to their neighbors to where stores will open. A geographic skill is an ability to apply spatial concepts to understand how people live. The most common tool for geographers is a map. A map can show almost any phenomenon that has a spatial distribution. Maps can help people identify and analyze world patterns and processes. For example, mapping the spread of a disease can help public health officials decide what steps to take to counter the spread.

One systematic way to study geographic phenomena is to use Four Level Analysis. The levels are comprehension of the basic information, identification and explanation of a pattern, and prediction of what the pattern might lead to. Traditionally, geographers would gather data through field experiences. To make maps, they carefully measured distances and drew what they saw. Today, geospatial technologies such as GIS, GPS and remote sensing,  make gathering information far more simple, though field experiences are still important.
