## Guide

## Unit 2!!!

## FAQs

### What is AP German Unit 2 about?

Unit 2, Sprache und Kultur in Deutschland, explores how language and culture shape identity in German-speaking societies. It covers four topics: language and regional identity, German literature and cultural memory, German cultural values and social norms, and German arts, media, and cultural expression. The main theme is Personal and Public Identities, with connections to Beauty and Aesthetics, Contemporary Life, and Science and Technology.

### What does Vergangenheitsbewältigung mean in AP German?

Vergangenheitsbewältigung means 'coming to terms with the past' and refers to how Germany processes and confronts its 20th-century history, especially the Nazi era. It appears in Unit 2's topic on German literature and cultural memory, where post-war literature serves as a way for society to remember and work through historical trauma. You can review related terms in the [AP German key terms glossary](/ap-german/key-terms).

### How does Unit 2 prepare you for the AP German exam?

Unit 2 introduces exam-format multiple-choice tasks (literary texts, articles with charts, and paired audio-article sources) at a slightly easier level than the real exam. It also has you complete scaled-down free-response tasks: an argumentative essay using two sources instead of three, and a one-minute spoken cultural comparison. You can practice both with [FRQ practice and instant scoring](/ap-german/frq-practice).

### Are German dialects considered incorrect German?

No. Dialects like Bavarian, Plattdeutsch, Swabian, and Schweizerdeutsch are valid language varieties that mark regional identity and cultural belonging, not errors. Hochdeutsch (standard German) is the shared standard, but Unit 2 treats regional speech as a source of pride and identity. Assuming dialect is 'wrong' can cause you to misread an author's perspective on exam texts.

### What makes a good cultural comparison in AP German?

A successful cultural comparison contains an effective introduction, defines both communities, stays well organized, makes a clear comparison, and provides details and elaboration. The most common mistake is describing only the German-speaking community without explicitly comparing it to your own. In Unit 2 you practice a one-minute version using a T-chart or Venn diagram to organize your ideas before speaking.
