Molasses is a thick syrup produced during the refining process of sugar. It's what's left over after all the sucrose has been crystallized out from cane or beet juice.
Sugar Act 1764: An act passed by British Parliament that imposed taxes on molasses imported into colonies not ruled by Britain.
Rum Distillation: The process by which rum is made from molasses through fermentation and distillation.
Mercantilism: An economic theory that trade generates wealth and is stimulated by the accumulation of profitable balances, which a government should encourage.
