Originally part of Massachusetts Bay Colony, Maine became its own state much later - in 1820 - as part of Missouri Compromise. Known for its shipbuilding industry during colonial times, it played an important role in trade and transportation.

Missouri Compromise: An agreement passed in 1820 between the pro-slavery and anti-slavery factions in Congress, which allowed Maine to join the Union as a free state.
Shipbuilding Industry: The industry responsible for constructing ships; it was particularly important in colonial Maine due to its abundant timber resources and access to waterways.
