Kosovo is a partially recognized state and disputed territory in Southeast Europe that declared independence from Serbia in 2008, following a long history of conflict.
Kosovo War: A conflict between Serbian forces and Kosovar Albanian rebels (the Kosovo Liberation Army) which took place from 1998-1999, resulting in NATO intervention.
NATO Intervention in Kosovo: In 1999, NATO conducted an air campaign against Yugoslavia (then composed of Serbia and Montenegro) to stop the violence against Albanians in Kosovo.
UNMIK (United Nations Mission In Kosovo): Established by Security Council Resolution 1244 following the Kosovo War, this mission aimed at providing an interim administration for Kosovo under UN auspices while determining its future status.
