An intellectual and philosophical movement that dominated Europe during the 18th century. It emphasized reason, individualism, skepticism towards traditional institutions, and a belief in progress.
Rationalism: The theory that opinions and actions should be based on reason and knowledge rather than on religious belief or emotional response.
Secularism: The principle of separation between government institutions and persons mandated to represent the state from religious institutions and religious dignitaries.
Humanism: A philosophical stance that emphasizes value & agency of human beings individually & collectively.
