Delaware is one of the 50 states of the United States, located in the Mid-Atlantic region. It was the first state to join the Union on December 7, 1787.
New Sweden: This was a Swedish colony along the lower reaches of Delaware River in America from 1638 to 1655.
Dutch West India Company: A chartered company (meaning it had been granted rights by government) of Dutch merchants. Among other things, this company established New Netherland, which included parts of what is now known as Delaware.
Ratification: The official way to confirm something, usually by vote. It is the formal validation of a proposed law or constitution - just like when Delaware ratified (or officially approved) the U.S Constitution in 1787.
