The Mandate of Heaven is a traditional Chinese philosophical concept concerning the legitimacy of rulers. It's believed that heaven grants its mandate to a just ruler, and if a ruler becomes unjust, they lose this mandate which can lead to their downfall.
Zhou Dynasty: This was the dynasty that introduced the concept of "Mandate of Heaven" in China.
Dynastic Cycle: This refers to the cycle through which Chinese dynasties rose, fell, and were replaced by new dynasties. The concept is closely related to the Mandate of Heaven as it often involved a new ruler receiving said mandate.
Confucianism: A system of philosophical and ethical teachings founded by Confucius and developed by Mencius; it emphasizes on morality, justice, and social harmony which are key principles for a ruler under the Mandate of Heaven.
