The West Bank Barrier is a separation barrier built by Israel in the West Bank or along its borders during the Second Intifada that began around 2000. It is controversial due to its impact on Palestinians living in regions it cuts off.
Second Intifada: A period of intensified Israeli-Palestinian violence which started in late September 2000.
Israeli Settlements: Residential communities inhabited by Israeli citizens, typically of Jewish ethnicity, built predominantly on lands within Palestinian territories.
Palestinian Territories: Regions including Gaza Strip and West Bank where Palestinians live under varying degrees of self-rule while still being subject to Israeli control.
