Forced Migration

Definition

Forced migration occurs when individuals must leave their homes due to factors outside their control such as war, natural disasters or persecution.

Related terms

Refugees: These are individuals who have been forced out of their home country due to fear of persecution based on race, religion, nationality etc., much like someone who has been evicted from their home because they were targeted unfairly by others.

Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs): IDPs are individuals who have had to flee their homes due external threats but remain within their own country’s borders – similar to having move from your bedroom into the basement because there was a leaky roof above your bed.

Asylum Seekers: These are individuals who have left their home country due to fear of persecution and seek protection in another country, like someone seeking shelter at a friend's house after being kicked out of their own home.
