The Vietnam War was a long, costly armed conflict that pitted the communist regime of North Vietnam and its southern allies, known as the Viet Cong, against South Vietnam and its principal ally, the United States. It occurred from 1955 to 1975.
Gulf of Tonkin Resolution: A resolution passed by Congress in 1964 giving President Lyndon B. Johnson broad powers to wage war in Southeast Asia after an alleged naval incident in the Gulf of Tonkin.
Tet Offensive: A massive surprise attack by the Vietcong on South Vietnamese towns and cities early in 1968 during Tet, Vietnamese New Year.
Vietnamization: U.S policy of withdrawing its troops and transferring the responsibility and direction of the war effort to the government of South Vietnam.
