These were territories claimed and governed by Spain outside of the Iberian Peninsula, primarily in the Americas, Asia, Africa and Oceania from the late 15th to early 19th centuries.
Colonialism: The policy or practice of acquiring full or partial political control over another country, occupying it with settlers, and exploiting it economically.
New World: A term referring to the majority of Earth's Western Hemisphere, specifically the Americas (including nearby islands), which were unknown to most Europeans before the voyages of Christopher Columbus.
Encomienda System: A labor system that was employed mainly by the Spanish crown during colonization of America where conquistadors were granted authority over indigenous populations.
