Charles V was the ruler of both the Spanish Empire as well as the Holy Roman Empire during the 16th century. His reign marked a significant period in European history, particularly because he was at the helm during major events like Martin Luther's Protestant Reformation.
Habsburg Dynasty: This was an influential royal house of Europe that produced many kings and emperors, including Charles V. The Habsburgs were known for their strategic marriages which expanded their influence across Europe.
Protestant Reformation: A religious movement in the 16th century that led to the creation of Protestant churches. It was initiated by Martin Luther, whose teachings challenged the authority of Pope and Catholic Church during Charles V's reign.
Peace of Augsburg (1555): This treaty ended religious warfare between Roman Catholics and Lutherans in Germany. It allowed rulers to choose either Catholicism or Lutheranism as their territory's religion, marking a significant event during Charles V’s rule.
