Donatello was an early Renaissance Italian artist and sculptor from Florence known for his work in bas-relief, a form of shallow relief sculpture.
Renaissance: A period in European history covering the span from the 14th to the 17th century. It is associated with cultural advancements and renewed interest in classical learning.
Bronze David (Donatello): One of Donatello's most famous works, this statue was the first unsupported standing work of bronze cast during the Renaissance period, and the first freestanding nude male sculpture made since antiquity.
