Algal Blooms

Definition

Algal blooms are rapid and excessive growths of algae in bodies of water, caused by an excess of nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus. These blooms can deplete oxygen levels in the water, leading to harmful effects on aquatic life.

Eutrophication: The process by which a body of water becomes enriched with nutrients, leading to excessive algal growth.

Dead zones: Areas in bodies of water where oxygen levels are extremely low or depleted due to algal blooms, causing harm or death to marine life.
