Thin-Layer Chromatography (TLC)

Definition

TLC is an analytical technique used to separate and identify compounds present in a given mixture. The mixture is applied onto a thin layer of adsorbent material, usually coated on plastic or glass plate.

Stationary Phase: In chromatography, this refers to the substance which stays fixed inside the column or coated on TLC plate.

Mobile Phase: This refers to the solvent moving through the stationary phase carrying along with it components of mixture under analysis.

Rf Value: A ratio calculated during chromatography that represents how far each component traveled relative to how far up we developed our plate.
