Acetylene is an unsaturated hydrocarbon with the molecular formula C₂H₂. It consists of two carbon atoms triple-bonded to each other and two hydrogen atoms attached to each carbon atom.
Alkyne: Acetylene belongs to the alkyne family of hydrocarbons, which are characterized by having at least one triple bond between carbon atoms.
Combustion reaction: Acetylene is highly flammable and undergoes complete combustion when ignited in the presence of oxygen, producing carbon dioxide and water.
Welding torch fuel: Due to its high heat value when burned with oxygen, acetylene is commonly used as fuel for welding torches.
