Metabolism refers to all chemical reactions involved in maintaining the living state of cells and organisms. It can be divided into two categories - catabolism (breaking down molecules) and anabolism (building up molecules).
Anabolism: Constructive metabolism; the synthesis in living organisms of more complex substances from simpler ones.
Catabolism: Destructive metabolism; the breaking down in living organisms of more complex substances into simpler ones, with release of energy.
Homeostasis: The tendency towards a relatively stable equilibrium between interdependent elements, especially as maintained by physiological processes.
