Ion channel receptors are proteins that span the cell membrane and allow specific ions to pass through when they are open. They open or close in response to a signal molecule binding to the receptor.
Voltage-gated ion channels: These are types of ion channels that open or close in response to changes in membrane potential.
Ligand-gated ion channels: These are types of ion channels that open or close in response to a specific ligand, such as a neurotransmitter.
Selective permeability: This is a property of cellular membranes that only allows certain molecules to enter or exit the cell.
