Hibernation is a state of inactivity and metabolic depression in endotherms (warm-blooded animals) that is characterized by lower body temperature, slower breathing, and lower metabolic rate.
Torpor: A short-term period of reduced activity in animals that is similar to hibernation but lasts for a shorter duration.
Estivation: This is the summer equivalent of hibernation where animals enter a state of dormancy to avoid extreme heat and dry conditions.
Endotherm: An organism that generates its own body heat internally, typically through metabolic processes.
